What does Fish Oil do? Omega 3, 6 and 9.

What does Fish Oil do?

Fish Oil is a supplement that is chalked full of Essential Fatty Acids or EFA’s for short. The term fatty acids refer to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that must be either provided by food or supplemented as your body does not naturally synthesize these crucial nutrients.

The term “omega” simply annotates the carbon-carbon double bond in either the 3rd, 6th or 9th position. This is why the health community talk about Omega 3s, Omega 6s and Omega 9s.

The Omega-3 nutrient is important in preventing and managing heart disease, it does this by reducing triglycerides that are common in men and women due to an overabundance of fried foods. By managing triglycerides you can slow the development of plaque in the arteries, reduce the chance of abnormal heart rhythms, lessen the chance of sudden cardiac death and reduce the likelihood of a stroke.

IThe Omega-6 nutrient, similarly, helps protect your heart but by reducing and lowering total cholesterol. To be clear, it helps lower the “bad” LDL cholesterol and raises the “good” HDL cholesterol as well as reducing cancer risks. Some studies suggest Omega-6 can help prevent MS and ADHD although more evidence is required as there is insufficient evidence to prove this.

The Omega-9 nutrient until recently flew under the radar as not much is known about the positive health benefits. That was until a 2015 study concluded that a high level of saturated fats in the form of Omega-9 improved insulin sensitivity and decreased inflammation at a rate higher than overweight and obese people who were deficient of this nutrient.

Insulin sensitivity is starting to be common in the world of dieting with people claiming that stubborn belly or the inability to lose weight might have something to do with insulin resistance. As for inflammation, well, we know that this is a huge cause of tons of disease, chronic illnesses and chronic pain, so any time we can reduce this, it is good!

This is why many doctors suggest taking a Fish Oil supplement that includes Omega-9’s as it can help with morning stiffness, relieve joint and tendon pain and might even reduce the need for anti-inflammatory medications.
This is also why our EFA Fish Oil supplement contains Omega 3, 6 and 9.
